…and the oscar goes to: my picks for tonight’s oscars.

0305_oscarSo, who’s taking home the hardware tonight? Let’s dive into it.

The Best Picture Nominees, Ranked

8. The Martian
It was good, but not great. Shocked it got nominated, honestly.

7. Mad Max: Fury Road
Best action movie of the year.

6. Brooklyn
A very good story about living in the present while your past wants you back.

5. Bridge of Spies
Spielberg/Hanks deliver another masterpiece.

4. The Revenant
Powerful and intense. I’m still processing it, honestly.

3. Room
In any other year, this would be No. 1, but for the top two. GREAT film!

2. Spotlight
I really struggled with this. It’s a strong, important story that reminds us the media sometimes gets it right.

1. The Big Short
Great on every level. Period.

Best Picture
The Big Short
Bridge of Spies
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
The Revenant

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
The Big Short. This was a complete film. Great performance. Great editing. Interesting storytelling devices and ultimately drew emotion out of a very dense subject matter. This was my favorite film this year, barely edging out Spotlight.

What I think will win:
The Big Short…for all the reasons I mentioned.

Best Director
George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road
Lenny Abrahamson, Room
Tom McCarthy, Spotlight
Adam McKay, The Big Short
Alejandro G. Iñárritu, The Revenant

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
Lenny Abrahamson. I loved what George Miller did with Furiosa Mad Max—same with Tom McCarthy, but Abrahamson captured a story through the eyes of a child and made it fly.

What I think will win:
Tom McCarthy…I don’t know why, but I do.

Best Actor
Bryan Cranston, Trumbo
Matt Damon, The Martian
Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant
Michael Fassbender, Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne, The Danish Girl

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
Leonardo DiCaprio. He was phenomenal. I have only seen two of the five, but I think DiCaprio is overdue.

What I think will win:
Leonardo DiCaprio

Best Actress
Cate Blanchett, Carol
Brie Larson, Room
Jennifer Lawrence, Joy
Charlotte Rampling, 45 Years
Saoirse Ronan, Brooklyn

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
Brie Larson. I think she’s a lock.

What I think will win:
Brie Larson.

Best Supporting Actor
Christian Bale, The Big Short
Tom Hardy, The Revenant
Mark Ruffalo, Spotlight
Mark Rylance, Bridge of Spies
Sylvester Stallone, Creed

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
Tom Hardy. This guy can do anything, I’m convinced. He was great in The Revenant with a character that was more complex than people might think.

What I think will win:
Tough one. I know Stallone is a sentimental favorite and Mark Ruffalo is always nominated (and was great in Spotlight). I think it’s going to be Ruffalo.

Best Supporting Actress
Jennifer Jason Leigh, The Hateful Eight
Rooney Mara, Carol
Rachel McAdams, Spotlight
Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
Kate Winslet, Steve Jobs

If I had a vote, I’d vote for…
I’ve only seen one performance, so I’m stuck with Rachel McAdams. She was good, but nothing stuck out to me about her performance.

What I think will win:
I don’t know. Rooney Mara.
